Learn everything about our onboard facilities, restaurants and dining experience, cabins and life on board in general. On a complete round trip, a total of 34 ports are called at during the 12 days. These include small towns with a few hundred inhabitants, with only short supply stops of a few minutes, as well as cities with stops of several hours. Passengers can expect a taste of Norway on both lines, with Havili focusing on a wide range of smaller plates and Hurtigruten offering a more conventional dining experience. The head-to-head competition has seen Hurtigruten announce a new partnership with award-winning Norwegian coastal chefs Astrid Nasslander and Halvar Ellingsen to enhance the menus and it also has a dedicated vegan menu.

Adventure Travel

Immediately after returning home I make the decision, that I want to experience this ship concept on the entire route and hopefully see my first aurora borealis. “Off to the Norwegian coast to hunt for the northern lights”, I hope that´s my motto for the upcoming winter season. That sounds like adventure, braving the forces of nature on the coast in freezing cold, searching for the light on the longest nights north of the Arctic Circle, dog sledding through the wintry landscape…. A standout feature is the focus on fresh, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients and a menu that changes every three days (aside from always available dishes).

The shower is very spacious and equipped with a fixed half glass partition. Havila Capella and its sister ships are 15,519 gross tons and carry 468  passengers at double occupancy in cabins and 172 foot passengers, with 78 crew. There are six categories of cabins, and the entry-level interior cabins start from 207 square feet.

Recently, I took the opportunity to visit the Havila Castor while it was docked in Trondheim. While the Havila name is new, the family-owned line was founded by long-standing parent company Havila Holding which has subsidiaries in fisheries, offshore shipping and hotels. The next table shows the 11-night / 12-day "Classic Norwegian Coastal Voyage" roundtrip from Bergen.

The original Norwegian coastal route's newest ships

From 2026 it will be a government requirement that any ships sailing into the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord will have to be emission-free. Havila has already achieved that by incorporating what it claims to be the world's largest battery packs -- equivalent to 600 Tesla cars -- into the propulsion system to enable the Havila Capella to sail without noise or emission. When battery power runs low the ship switches to liquefied natural gas (LNG) which is currently the most environmentally friendly marine fuel, and cuts CO2 emissions by around 25 percent. The same technology is being used in the sister ships and the batteries are recharged in ports. The ship sails year-round on the classic Bergen-Kerkenes-Bergen route along the Norwegian coastline with stops at 34 ports along the way.

The Norwegian Government's annual subsidy for this regularly scheduled ferry service is NOK 788 million (~EUR 77M / ~USD 92M). The Government's ferry contracts are fixed (for a 10-year period) and secure a minimum annual revenue of NOK 285 million (~EUR 28M/ ~USD 33M). We make your Norwegian Coastal Voyage more sustainable, more comfortable and more affordable. Our staff is friendly and welcoming, always going the extra mile to ensure every guest has the best possible experience onboard. For a short journey where a cabin isn't necessary, a recliner in our Port-to-Port Lounge is an excellent choice.

Entertainment is low-key to the point of being non-existent, as is the norm with this type of voyage. There is a hot tub on the outdoor deck, games and jigsaws in the lounge and talks and films about the area in the conference room. The liveliest thing that happens during the sailing is the ceremony that is held when Havila Capella crosses the Arctic Circle and Njord, the god of the sea and wind, "christens" passengers with ice cold water.

Excursions on a Havila Voyages cruise

It wasn’t the sauna, jacuzzi, or fitness room that opened to expansive views, making me feel as though I was running on water. Neither was it Havly Cafe where I tasted Norwegian waffles for the first time, nor the Hildring restaurant where I had my first-ever bite of reindeer meat as part of an elegant five-course meal. Meanwhile, Hurtigruten has begun the process of retrofitting its fleet with hybrid technology, and is a partner in a research project to launch a completely zero-emissions ship by 2030. This means they were the first vessels of their size capable of meeting the Norwegian government’s upcoming requirements for zero-emissions cruising in the World Heritage fjords. Havila Capella is one of four new ships from Havila Voyages that will operate on the classic ...

The equipment includes sufficiently large wardrobes, sofa and desk, TV, minibar, hairdryer, tea and coffee. One looks for a safe against it in vain (only starting from junior suite). There is one aspect you should pay attention to when entering the bathroom.

The Havblikk Bar & Lounge is ideal for stargazing while sipping a cocktail. The glass roof of this observation lounge offers a view of the starry sky or even the northern lights. The interior decor of Havila Capella has been designed to bring passengers as close as possible to the passing scenery, and as the ship always hugs the coastline there is always something to see. Large panoramic windows have been incorporated into the dining room, lounges and seating areas around the vessel and the gym -- split into two areas at each side of the ship -- boasts the best views of any wellness centre at sea. The top deck observation lounge and bar has reclining chairs and a glass roof to observe the star-studded night sky or the midnight sun during summer months. The Havila vessels can accommodate a maximum of 640 passengers in 179 cabins with a combined 468 beds.

Havila Capella is a ship on the Norwegian coastal route that provides caters for cruise passengers, local residents travelling as foot passengers and also transports freight. The service is an important part of everyday life for Norwegians, visiting some small and inaccessible towns that can take hours to reach by road. At the same time it offers a scenic journey through the beautiful scenery of the fjords with the chance to experience the spectacle of the northern lights and midnight sun. Havila Capella, along with its trio of sister ships, was built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey. It is a hybrid gas-electric powered vessel and incorporates high-tech features to uphold Havila Voyages' sustainable and eco-friendly philosophy.

That’s why the public areas are equipped with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows throughout. So the coast is always in view, whether you’re making yourself comfortable in a lounge chair or just passing by. The same applies to the restaurants, where the views of the stylishly arranged dishes compete with the coastal panorama, but thanks to floor-to-ceiling window fronts you won’t miss the sudden appearance of a humpback whale.
